China’s Fan Takes World Number One Spot for the First Time

21-year-old FAN Zhendong (CHN) has overtook table tennis legend Timo BOLL (GER) to become the new world number one for the first time in his career on the new April 2018 ITTF World Ranking released today.
 
The 2017 World Championships silver medalist FAN, who took the world number two spot since November 2015, won the prestigious title at the Seamaster 2018 ITTF World Tour Platinum Qatar Open earlier in March to earn him the world ranking points to top the chart this month.
 
“It is an amazing feeling to become the word number one, it has always been a big dream of mine. I hope I can keep this position for a very long time,” stated FAN after receiving the news that he will take over the top spot on the new World Ranking.
 
BOLL, who made history last month to become the oldest world number one at 36-years-old, 22 months and 21 days old on 1 March after rolling back the years to reclaim the top spot, settles at number two, one place ahead of compatriot Dimitrij OVTCHAROV (GER).
 
FAN’s teammate XU Xin and LIN Gaoyuan takes the fourth and fifth place respectively, while reigning World & Olympic Champion MA Long, whose ranking fell due to inactivity in 2017, makes his way back up the chart to number six this month after taking Gold at the Seamaster 2018 ITTF World Tour Platinum German Open in Bremen last week.
 
Brazil's Hugo CALDERANO's world ranking rose to a career new high at number 12, after a successful outing in Qatar, upsetting several top stars to make the finals. 

In the Women’s ranking, China’s CHEN Meng reclaims the world number one position from colleague ZHU Yuling after reaching semifinals at the Qatar Open, while ZHU was knocked out of the tournament early in the Round of 32 by eventual Champion LIU Shiwen (CHN), whose ranking rose from 20 in March to 10 this month.
 
Japan’s Kasumi ISHIKAWA & Singapore’s FENG Tianwei remains at three and four on the April’s World Ranking list, while Qatar Open finalist WANG Manyu climbed two places up to settle fifth and round up the top 5 on the Women’s World Ranking.
 
This comes under the effect of the newly developed ITTF World Ranking which will present a more accurate measure and realistic representation of the playing level of athlete’s current performance, as well as to ensure that the World Ranking better supports ITTF events.

The world's top stars will now make full preparations for the biggest table tennis event of the year, the Liebherr 2018 World Team Table Tennis Championships to be held in Halmstad, Sweden from 29 April to 6 May 2018.

A nine-member table tennis squad, led by triple-gold medallist A. Sharath Kamal, coaches Massimo Costantini and Soumyadeep Roy along with two support staff (a masseur and physio) left this morning for Gold Coast to participate in the Commonweal Games, beginning on April 4.

 The team members, after arriving from their respective hometowns, headed straight to Rio Restaurant in Rajouri Garden where the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) hosted a send-off dinner in honor of the players, coaches and the support staff.

 After quiet and sumptuous dinner, the team members have presented bouquets and Secretary General M.P. Singh wished them well for the Games.

 Speaking on behalf of the players, Sharath expressed confidence and said that all players were positive about India’s performance. ‘’We realize the importance of the Games and equally the expectations of millions of India. Fortunately, we have the best possible team in both sections and I am sure we will not disappoint you as we expect to have a good harvest of medals at Gold Coast,” said Sharath.

 Coach Massimo was equally cheerful and said India had the best chance this time. “I am expecting the teams to win at least four medals. All players are in good shape which is an indication of the level of preparation. I am positive and so are the team members,” said the coach.

Yashini Sivasankar and Srushti Haleangadi, the players in form, upset senior colleagues

Archana Girish Kamath gave the top seeds the ideal start by overcoming Yashini Sivasankar (15-13, 12-10, 11-4) but that was to prove the sum total of her team’s success.

Moumita Dutta was beaten by Srushti Haleangadi (8-11, 11-6, 11-8, 11-9) and by Yashini Sivanksankar (7-11, 1-11, 11-7, 12-10, 12-10), whilst sandwiched in between Moumita Dutta and Selena Selvakumar experienced a four games doubles defeat at the hands of Srushti Haleangadi and Prapti Sen (11-7, 11-6, 11-6, 11-4).

Defeat but it was to prove the only defeat of the day for the India ‘A’ outfit; second place in the group was the end result and progress to the semi-finals; Yashini Sivasankar and Srushti Haleangadi duly remained unbeaten to reserve first place.

An unexpected first place, not in the corresponding group; the combination of Thailand’s Jinnipa Sawettabut and Singapore’s Zhang Wanling, the second seeds, duly sealed first position. Runners up spot finished in the hands of the India ‘D’ formation of Ishita Gupta, Surbhi Patwari and Varuni Jaiswal.

Meanwhile, in the counterpart Cadet Girls’ Team event, likewise two groups in the initial stage with first and second places in each group gaining a penultimate round place, there was notable success for the host nation.

India ‘C’ selecting from Suhana Saini, Trisha Gogi and Vanshili Bhargava finished ahead of India ‘D’ represented by Kavya Sree Baskar, Radhapriya Goel and Cathrintina Arokia Dass. In the corresponding group the respective top two places were secured by India ‘A’ who selected from Munmun Kundou, Swastika Ghosh and Anush Kutumbale, alongside Korea’s Kim Jia, Heo Yeeun and Lee Dayeong secured second place.

Both the Junior Girls’ Team and Cadet Girls’ Team events will conclude on Sunday 29th October.

ULTIMATE TABLE TENNIS IS HERE:Know the details,format and schedule

Ultimate Table Tennis is hosting its inaugural season in 2017 to promote and enhance Table Tennis as a Sport in India. After the successful impact of India Open 2017 held in New Delhi in February 2017, Ultimate Table Tennis will achieve its goal in realizing the potential of Table Tennis in India. The league will play a pivotal role in achieving this objective by working in cohesion with the stakeholders: Table Tennis Federation of India, The Franchises and The Broadcaster.

General Format of play

1. 
   

   Each Team will play 9 Matches(4Men's singles,4 Women's singles,1 Mixed doubles) in a Tie with each Match comprising 3 Games. Consequently, each Tie shall comprise 27 Games.

2. Each Game shall have Players compete with each other to score 11 points first. In the event that scores are level at 10-all, then the 11th point will be a Golden Point and that shall decide the winner of the Game. Whichever individual/pair scores 11 points and is termed as the winner of each Game shall receive one point towards the Team’s total for each such Game that is won.
3. The winning Team in a Tie shall be decided by the number of total Games won i.e. total points won in the relevant Tie, meaning a Team that wins 14 or more Games out of the 27 Games shall be termed as the Winner of that respective Tie with variations for League Ties and Play-Off Ties.
4. The tentative order of play for each Tie is listed in the table below. However, this is subject to change by ESPL at its discretion if required. The order of play for a Tie may particularly be changed for the Play-Off Ties.

ITTF Announces 2018 ITTF World Tour Calendar

The International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) is excited to announce the 12 cities that will host the 2018 ITTF World Tour events.

The 2018 is set to be the biggest in history, with more prize money, more fan engagement and a better TV spectacle for the world wide TV audience.

On the announcement, ITTF Director of Competitions Karl JINDRAK stated: "In 2017 we relaunched the ITTF World Tour with a new logo, new branding, new competition structure and better conditions for the players. This has resulted in record prize money for 2017, and we hope to break this record again in 2018 and to keep moving the ITTF World Tour forward to make it the best product possible for our players, fans and members.”

The 2018 World Tour will be split into two tiers, six ITTF World Tour Platinum events, which is the new top tier of the World Tour, and six regular ITTF World Tour events.

The six ITTF World Tour Platinum events will have higher prize money, and be of a higher level organisation, which will ensure the attendance of the world's best players, resulting in more international exposure for the hosts.

The six cities that have won the rights to host a 2018 ITTF World Tour Platinum event are:

• Doha, Qatar: 8-11 March 2018
• Bremen, Germany 23-25 March 2018
• Shenzhen, China: 31 May – 3 June 2018
• Incheon, Korea: 19-22 July 2018
• Linz, Austria: 4-7 October 2018
