The defending world champion, Ding Ning was not able to reach the finals of the squad trials of the Chinese Women’s Team. In fact, she only reached the semifinals after losing to Liu Shiwen. In her interview after the match, Ding Ning revealed that she had other concerns in the competition and it was not about winning.

According to the head coach Kong Linghui, Ding Ning played well in the opening day.“Ding Ning was the best player in the first day. Not only because she won the matches but also because she had some changes.” Kong Linghui said.
In the group stage, Ding Ning consecutively won against Wang Yidi, Wu Yang and Zhu Yuling. That sealed her seat in the main draw. In the semifinals, she lost to Liu Shiwen in 1-3. Despite loss, the world champion still maintained a positive disposition.
“In this competition, I didn’t consider so much about the results because this competition is before the Closed Training. What I hoped more was for me to adjust myself and learn in order to prepare for the training.” Ding Ning said.
